How Can Kidney Stones Can Be Prevented?




Kidney stones (Lithiasis, nephrolithiasis) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. Often, kidney stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, allowing salts and minerals to crystallize and stick together. 


FACTORS KNOWN TO INCREASE THE RISK OF KIDNEY STONES INCLUDES 


  • Dehydration 
  • Family history
  • Physical inactivity 
  • Genetics 
  • Excess weight 
  • Certain drugs such as acetazolamide
  • Presence of certain medical conditions. 


SYMPTOMS

Many kidney stones are painless until they travel from the kidney, down the ureter, and into the bladder. Depending on the size of the stone, movement of the stone through the urinary tract can cause severe pain with sudden onset.

Pain can be  excruciating. Common sites of pain and cramping are Lower back, abdomen, and sides.



WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT FOR KIDNEY STONES? 

Most people with kidney stones are able to pass them on their own within 48 hours by drinking plenty of fluids. Pain medication can ease the discomfort. The smaller the stone, the more likely it is to pass without intervention.

HOW CAN KIDNEY STONES BE PREVENTED?

The best way to avoid kidney stones is to prevent the most common cause which is DEHYDRATION. You are adequately hydrated when the urine is CLEAR. Most people require between 8 to 10 glasses of water per day.

Avoid GRAPE FRUIT JUICE which is linked to the development of kidney stones.
